Description

Module 2 extends the teaching of Social Thinking Vocabulary toward increasingly complex social concepts such as problem solving and helping students avoid “the blurt” as they learn to read the hidden social rules. We also investigate how to teach social language tools to encourage conversational language, beginning with exploring how people share an imagination as part of the conversational process. The viewer will learn how to think more deeply about the many social concepts we take for granted but expect students to use as they share space and interact in the school, home, and community.

*Treatment refers to using conceptual and strategy-based frameworks to help individuals improve their social thinking, skills, and competencies.

2 Module Series

An Introduction to Social Thinking Vocabulary & Treatment Frameworks

preload

About This Series

Key concepts explored in this series: Social Thinking vocabulary, social skills, social concepts, self-awareness, size of the problem.

To teach components of the Social Thinking Methodology well means we need to consciously avoid assumptions about an individual’s working knowledge of the social world. In these modules, we will introduce core Social Thinking treatment* frameworks and vocabulary for use with individuals of different ages and social learning abilities. These modules represent a sampling of some of our core frameworks and strategies and are intended to give viewers an introduction to how to teach students to think socially to develop self-awareness of the concepts. The Social Thinking Vocabulary was developed to: a) give professionals and parents a common vocabulary, b) make abstract social concepts more concrete, and c) give students and clients a practical way to understand social expectations. The modules in this series show practical ways to teach understanding (input) of social concepts before practicing social skills (output).

*Treatment refers to using conceptual and strategy-based frameworks to help individuals improve their social thinking, skills, and competencies.

  1. I do not pay ASHA for CE Registry
    • This option is for SLPs who do not pay to use the ASHA CE Registry. This could be because you are not affiliated with ASHA, do not maintain your CCCs, or choose to maintain your own CE hours, which ASHA refers to as Certification Maintenance Hours, or CMHs. If the latter applies to you, save your Certificate of Completion as it qualifies as your ASHA Verification of Attendance form. If you select this option, your CE information will NOT be sent to the ASHA CE Registry. If you are not affiliated with ASHA, we recommend you contact your licensing and/or certification organization to confirm whether you can earn credit for watching our On Demand content. For some professionals, your personalized Certificate of Completion may meet the criteria necessary to earn CE credit!

  2. I pay ASHA for CE Registry
    • This option is for SLPs who pay annually to use the ASHA CE Registry to maintain their CE hours (info about the ASHA CE Registry below). Once you’ve completed a module, finished the evaluation, and passed the test, we will submit your CE information to ASHA at the end of that month at no additional cost. ASHA will process the information and award credit within the ASHA CE Registry (assuming you meet all of their requirements). It may take a few months for your ASHA CEUs to be reflected on your transcript. For inquiries about credit awarded or not awarded within the CE Registry, ask ASHA directly.
